𝐒𝐨𝐦𝐞𝐭𝐢𝐦𝐞𝐬, 𝐜𝐚𝐫𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐛𝐞𝐠𝐢𝐧𝐬 𝐰𝐢𝐭𝐡 𝐬𝐢𝐦𝐩𝐥𝐲 𝐬𝐡𝐨𝐰𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐮𝐩.

What we saw reminded us of something that is often easy to overlook:
𝘼𝙜𝙚𝙞𝙣𝙜 𝙖𝙣𝙙 𝙘𝙖𝙧𝙚𝙜𝙞𝙫𝙞𝙣𝙜 𝙝𝙖𝙥𝙥𝙚𝙣 𝙞𝙣 𝙝𝙤𝙢𝙚𝙨 𝙖𝙣𝙙 𝙘𝙤𝙢𝙢𝙪𝙣𝙞𝙩𝙞𝙚𝙨, 𝙣𝙤𝙩 𝙤𝙣𝙡𝙮 𝙞𝙣 𝙝𝙤𝙨𝙥𝙞𝙩𝙖𝙡𝙨 𝙖𝙣𝙙 𝙘𝙖𝙧𝙚 𝙛𝙖𝙘𝙞𝙡𝙞𝙩𝙞𝙚𝙨.
For many families, caring for an older relative is a daily responsibility carried alongside the struggle to earn a living, provide food, manage household needs and care for other generations within the same home.
The daughter we met is doing her best to care for her mother while also engaging in petty trading to support the household. Their circumstances reminded us that the wellbeing of an older person is closely connected to the wellbeing and capacity of the person caring for them.
This is precisely why we believe community-based support matters.
At ALF, we are learning directly from families about what older persons and their caregivers need, not from a distance, but by going into homes, listening and walking alongside families.

Our home visits are still small in scale, but each one is helping us understand the realities of ageing and family caregiving in Northern Ghana and how we can build more practical, compassionate and dignified support systems.
We are deeply grateful to this family for welcoming us and allowing us to share a little of their story.
And to our visiting team: Amanda Anipu, Mariam Hamza and our new volunteer, Faridatu Innusah, thank you for giving your time to this family today.
